About The Issues
The Provider Shortage
One of the greatest obstacles to safe, legal abortion in the United
States and Canada today is the absence of trained providers. According
to a study conducted in 2000, 87% of all U.S. counties have no abortion
provider (1).
Lack of Training
An estimated 43% of women in the U.S. will have at least one abortion
by the time they are 45 years old (8).
Yet, few medical students and residents are learning about abortion
and how to provide this procedure.
Curriculum Reform
49% of pregnancies among American women are unintended; half of these
end in abortion (8). And yet, as an academic
subject, abortion is given scarcely more than a few sentences in
most medical school courses combined.
